Cross-chain messaging protocols are the backbone of blockchain interoperability: they carry arbitrary messages — token burns and mints, governance calls, oracle updates — between otherwise disconnected networks. The value at stake is substantial. As of July 2026, DefiLlama tracks roughly $7.1 billion locked in LayerZero's OFT and bridge contracts, the most of any messaging layer, while Wormhole's Portal bridge holds a further ~$2.4 billion; LayerZero itself reports $75B+ in assets secured across 700+ applications. LayerZero tops this ranking on adoption and configurability: its v2 architecture lets each application choose its own set of Decentralized Verifier Networks (DVNs). That flexibility cuts both ways — the April 2026 Kelp DAO exploit ($292M) abused an rsETH bridge configured with a single 1-of-1 DVN, and LayerZero has since recommended multi-DVN setups as the default. Wormhole (19 Guardian validators), Axelar (proof-of-stake validator set with GMP), Hyperlane (permissionless deployment, modular security), and Circle's CCTP (native USDC burn-and-mint) round out the field.
