Overview

The digital ruble is Russia's central bank digital currency, developed by the Bank of Russia and piloted since 2023 with a limited group of banks, individuals and companies. Mass rollout was originally targeted for 1 July 2025 but was postponed; the central bank has since set 1 September 2026 as the date from which the largest systemically important banks must offer digital ruble transactions and larger retailers must accept it for payment. Federal government bodies were cleared to use the digital ruble from 1 January 2026 for uses such as budget and social payments. It is designed to work inside existing banking apps rather than through a standalone wallet app.
