Overview

Umbrella is Aave's replacement for its Safety Module, deployed on 5 June 2025. Instead of staking AAVE or AAVE/ETH liquidity tokens, users stake yield-bearing aTokens such as aUSDC, aUSDT and aWETH, continuing to earn the underlying supply yield plus additional rewards in exchange for accepting slashing risk. Umbrella covers bad debt automatically and per-asset, burning staked assets in response to measurable on-chain deficits rather than requiring a governance vote to trigger a slashing event as the original 2020 Safety Module did.
