Overview

Avalanche9000, activated on the Avalanche mainnet on 16 December 2024 through the Etna upgrade, was the network's largest upgrade to date. Its centrepiece, ACP-77, converted Subnets into sovereign Avalanche L1s and removed the requirement for each validator to stake 2,000 AVAX, replacing it with a much smaller continuous fee — a change the Avalanche Foundation described as cutting the cost of running an L1 by about 99.9%. The upgrade also introduced dynamic fees on the P-Chain, lowered C-Chain base fees, and standardised Interchain Messaging between Avalanche chains.
