Overview

EigenLayer activated slashing on Ethereum mainnet on April 17, 2025, completing the protocol's original design. Slashing lets an AVS define conditions its operators must meet and penalise their restaked collateral if those conditions are violated, giving restaking real economic accountability rather than only pooled capital. At activation the ecosystem comprised more than 190 AVSs with around 40 live on mainnet, including LayerZero and Infura, and over 80,000 restakers providing more than $7 billion of shared security. Adoption was phased, with individual AVSs enabling slashing on their own timelines.
