SEC Approves Spot Ethereum ETFs event
Overview
The SEC approved U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs in two steps in 2024. On May 23, 2024 it approved the 19b-4 exchange rule-change filings that permitted listing, covering issuers including BlackRock, Fidelity, VanEck, Grayscale, Franklin Templeton, ARK 21Shares, Invesco Galaxy and Bitwise. The funds still could not trade until their Securities Act registration statements were cleared: on July 22, 2024 the SEC declared nine S-1 registration statements effective, and the ETFs began trading on July 23, 2024. The approvals followed the January 2024 spot bitcoin ETF approvals and made ether the second crypto asset with a U.S. spot exchange-traded product.
