On September 17, 2020, Uniswap launched its UNI governance token and retroactively airdropped it to more than 250,000 addresses that had previously used the protocol. Every address that had ever called the Uniswap v1 or v2 contracts before the September 1, 2020 00:00 UTC snapshot could claim 400 UNI, worth roughly $1,200 at the time. Liquidity providers, historical power users and holders of the Unisocks (SOCKS) token received larger allocations, with over 250 addresses receiving 250,000 UNI; about 93.8% of recipients got less than 412 UNI. The airdrop became the template for retroactive token distributions across DeFi.
