Overview

Uniswap Labs introduced UniswapX in July 2023 as an opt-in beta, alongside a whitepaper authored by Hayden Adams, Noah Zinsmeister and colleagues. UniswapX is an intent-based, auction-driven routing protocol: rather than submitting a transaction to a specific AMM pool, a user signs an off-chain order describing the trade they want, and a network of third-party "fillers" competes in a Dutch auction — with the price decaying over time — to execute it against AMMs and other on-chain or off-chain liquidity. Orders are structured as Permit2 off-chain signatures, so swappers can trade without paying gas, and because fillers execute the trade users are shielded from sandwich attacks and other harmful MEV, with any positive slippage returned to the swapper.

Frequently asked questions

When was UniswapX launched?

Uniswap Labs introduced it in July 2023 as an opt-in beta, published with a whitepaper by Hayden Adams, Noah Zinsmeister and co-authors.

How does the Dutch auction work?

The price offered to fillers starts slightly above the user's target and decays over time. Fillers compete to fill the order, accepting progressively smaller profit to avoid losing it to a rival.

What are the benefits for swappers?

Orders are signed off-chain using Permit2, giving a gas-free trading experience; execution by fillers protects against sandwich attacks and frontrunning; and any positive slippage is returned to the swapper as price improvement.
