Overview

In early August 2023 the Kenyan government suspended Worldcoin's activities in the country, making Kenya the first country to fully halt the project's operations. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced the suspension, citing concerns about the registration of citizens through the collection of iris and eyeball data and directing that it remain in place pending investigations by Kenya's security, financial and data protection agencies into the safety and legitimacy of the harvested data. Worldcoin had been offering Kenyans a cash reward and free WLD tokens in exchange for iris scans, drawing long queues before the halt. Kindiki later told Parliament that the government would not lift the suspension.
