Animoca Brands fund
Overview
Animoca Brands Corporation Ltd. is a Hong Kong-based game software and venture capital company co-founded in 2014 by Yat Siu and David Kim. It began as a mobile games developer — spun out of Animoca, which had raised a Series A led by Intel Capital and IDG-Accel in 2011 — and pivoted to blockchain gaming and NFTs in 2018. It listed on the Australian Securities Exchange on 23 January 2015 and delisted on 9 March 2020. Its best-known property is The Sandbox, acquired via the $4.875 million purchase of developer Pixowl in August 2018; it has also licensed brands including Atari, Formula E, Manchester City FC, MotoGP, Snoop Dogg, Marvel, Power Rangers and WWE. Its holdings and investments include Axie Infinity, OpenSea, Dapper Labs, Yuga Labs, Colossal Biosciences, MoviePass and CryptoKitties, making it as much a crypto investment vehicle as an operator. Valuation escalated rapidly: $1 billion in May 2021, $2.2 billion in October 2021 (a $65 million round from Ubisoft, Sequoia Capital and others), $5.9 billion by July 2022, and $6 billion in an August 2022 round of $110 million led by Temasek and GGV Capital to make it 'pre-IPO ready'. Animoca delisted from the ASX in March 2020 and was convicted on 21 June 2022 of failing to lodge annual and half-yearly financial reports with ASIC. It shut down F1 Delta Time in March 2022 after sales flatlined, replacing non-functional NFTs with REVV Racing tokens. Acquisitions include TicBits (2016), Pixowl (2018), Quidd ($8M, 2019), nWay ($7.69M, 2019), Eden Games (2022), WePlay Media (2022) and SOMO (January 2026). In November 2025 it announced plans to go public on Nasdaq via reverse merger with Currenc Group, expected to close in 2026 with Animoca shareholders owning about 95% of the new entity. In February 2026 it received a VASP licence from Dubai's virtual asset regulator.
