Overview

Bitstamp is a cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2011 by Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak as a European alternative to Mt. Gox, and is generally described as the longest continuously operating crypto exchange. It lists dozens of tradable assets and holds a large number of licences and registrations across multiple jurisdictions. Belgian investment firm NXMH acquired Bitstamp in 2018, and Ripple later took a minority stake. In June 2024 Robinhood agreed to acquire Bitstamp for roughly $200 million in cash; the deal closed in June 2025 and extended Robinhood beyond retail brokerage into institutional and international crypto markets.
