Celestia coined the modular blockchain stack: separate execution, settlement, consensus, data availability. TIA airdrop (Oct 2023) was one of the most successful in DeFi history. The thesis remains: modular wins because specialized layers are more efficient. The challenge: Ethereum proto-danksharding (4844) made calldata cheap, eroding Celestia's economic advantage.

It provides data availability for other chains: rollups post their transaction data to Celestia and it guarantees that data was published and can be retrieved, without executing the transactions itself.
What is data availability sampling?
A technique in which light nodes randomly sample small pieces of erasure-coded block data to gain high confidence that the full block was published, avoiding the need to download it.
What is Blobstream?
A mechanism, previously called the Quantum Gravity Bridge, that relays commitments to Celestia's data root onto Ethereum through an on-chain light client so Ethereum rollups can rely on Celestia for data availability.
