MiCA Asset-Referenced Token regime regulation
Overview
An asset-referenced token (ART) is one of the two stablecoin categories defined by the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), governed by Title III. An ART is a crypto-asset that seeks to maintain a stable value by referencing another value or right, or a combination of them — for example a basket of currencies, commodities or crypto-assets — rather than a single official currency. Issuers must be authorised by a competent national authority in the EU and comply with reserve, governance, disclosure and white paper obligations. MiCA's stablecoin titles began applying on 30 June 2024; ARTs that meet significance thresholds are supervised by the European Banking Authority.
