zkSync Era chain
Overview
zkSync Era is a zero-knowledge rollup on Ethereum built by Matter Labs, designed for higher scalability and lower gas costs than Ethereum mainnet while inheriting Ethereum's security through validity proofs. Its execution environment is EraVM, a custom virtual machine rather than a straight EVM clone, with an EVM bytecode interpreter layered on to provide Ethereum compatibility; more recent work is organised around ZKsync OS as the protocol's execution layer. A defining feature is native account abstraction: smart accounts are first-class on zkSync Era rather than bolted on via a separate mempool, which lets applications implement custom signature schemes, sponsored gas and session keys directly. The protocol's transaction batches are proven with zero-knowledge circuits and settled on Ethereum, and the codebase is open source under Matter Labs' GitHub with a published audit history and bug bounty programme. zkSync Era is the flagship deployment of the wider ZK Stack, the framework Matter Labs offers for launching additional ZK chains. zkSync Era is Matter Labs' EVM-compatible successor to the earlier payments-only zkSync, and has since become the reference chain for the ZK Stack framework, with the protocol's execution layer evolving toward ZKsync OS.
