What is Private Key?

How it works

A private key is generated from a cryptographically secure random number, often encoded as a seed phrase (BIP39) to simplify backup. Using hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallets (BIP32), a single seed phrase derives many private keys, each corresponding to a unique public key and blockchain address. The public key is computed via one-way elliptic curve multiplication, making it impossible to reverse-engineer the private key. This ensures that funds can be received safely without exposing the secret.

To authorize a transaction, the private key creates a digital signature (e.g., ECDSA in Bitcoin and Ethereum). This signature proves ownership of the private key without revealing it. The signature, along with the transaction data, is broadcast to the network. Nodes verify the signature using the corresponding public key. Techniques like EIP-155 add chain ID to signatures to prevent replay attacks across different blockchains.
