What is a memecoin? (definition)
A memecoin is a cryptocurrency whose value is driven by community, attention and cultural narrative rather than any inherent utility, cash flow or business model. Most memecoins launch with no formal team commitments, no roadmap, and no use case beyond trading and signaling membership in a community. Despite that, the category produced several top-50 tokens by market cap and is now arguably the most active retail-facing corner of crypto.
The original memecoin is Dogecoin (DOGE), launched on December 6, 2013 by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus as a parody of Bitcoin. Dogecoin survived bear markets, became culturally associated with Elon Musk, and is still one of the longest-lived crypto assets. The category exploded in scale in 2024-2025 thanks to Solana, Pump.fun and AI agents.
How memecoins work (technical mechanics)
Token issuance is trivial
On modern chains, anyone can deploy an SPL or ERC-20 token in minutes. Pump.fun, Bonk.fun and other launchpads automate the entire process: pay a small fee, fill in a name, ticker and image, and the platform handles deployment, initial liquidity and bonding-curve pricing.
Bonding curves and "graduation"
Pump.fun introduced a now-standard pattern: tokens trade against a bonding curve where price rises predictably as more SOL is deposited. Once a market-cap threshold is reached, the token "graduates" - liquidity migrates to a real DEX (initially Raydium, later Pump.fun's own PumpSwap) and free trading begins. This makes early entry extremely high-variance: most tokens never graduate; the few that do can 10x or 100x within hours.
Liquidity locks and burns
Reputable launches burn or lock LP tokens so that the deployer cannot rug. Liquidity status is the single most important on-chain signal a researcher can check before buying.
Mint and freeze authorities
A clean SPL token has revoked mint and freeze authorities, which prevents the deployer from minting unlimited supply or freezing user wallets. Birdeye, DexScreener and dedicated rug-check tools surface these properties.
Narrative and distribution
Once a token exists, success is mostly about distribution. Twitter, Telegram, Discord and TikTok drive narrative; influential posters, AI agents like aixbt and Telegram trading bots like BONKbot and Photon compress discovery into seconds.

Key memecoins in 2026
The classics
- Dogecoin (DOGE) - 2013, the oldest memecoin, associated with Elon Musk; runs on its own Dogecoin chain with a separate Dogechain EVM L2.
- Shiba Inu (SHIB) - 2020, "Dogecoin killer"; ecosystem includes ShibaSwap and the Shibarium L2.
- PEPE - April 2023, the leading Ethereum frog-themed memecoin; spawned Pepe Unchained L2.
Solana flagship memecoins
- BONK - launched December 2022 by BonkDAO, Solana's first major airdrop.
- dogwifhat (WIF) - the iconic Solana memecoin of 2024, ATH near $4.85.
- POPCAT - +60,000% rally in 2024 around a viral cat meme.

Base ecosystem
Politically themed tokens
- Official Trump (TRUMP) - launched January 17 2025 on Solana by entities affiliated with Donald Trump; peaked near a $14B market cap.
- MELANIA - launched January 19 2025; trading volume diluted both tokens.
- These tokens cross-link to Trump Media (DJT) and to Crypto.com's wallet/exchange business; the broader Trump-aligned WLFI (World Liberty Financial) ecosystem appeared in adjacent narratives.
Research and reports
A growing body of mainstream crypto research now treats memecoins as a structural category rather than an aberration. Key reports to anchor any memecoin thesis include:
- Messari Crypto Theses 2025 - dedicates a full section to memecoins as the dominant retail onboarding wedge of the cycle.
- a16z State of Crypto 2025 - discusses how attention markets compete with traditional financial product markets.
- Galaxy Digital Crypto Outlook 2025 - covers Pump.fun's revenue trajectory and the macroeconomic implications of token-driven retail flow.
- Delphi Digital Annual Report 2025 - benchmarks Solana, Base and Ethereum memecoin volumes against DeFi TVL for the first time.
- Messari State of Solana 2024 - documents how memecoins drove Solana's 2024 fee revenue and validator economics.
- Chainalysis Crypto Crime Report 2024 - quantifies rugpull losses across launchpads and chains.
- Chainalysis Geography of Cryptocurrency 2024 - shows that memecoin trading is concentrated in North America, Korea and Southeast Asia.
- a16z Crypto Degen Score Framework - proposes a methodology for grading speculative token quality, including memecoins.
These reports collectively reframe memecoins from "noise" to "structural feature of crypto retail" - a shift that matters for regulators, exchanges and product designers.
Solana memecoin platforms
Pump.fun
Pump.fun, founded by Alon Cohen, is the most important launch platform of the cycle. The bonding-curve UX, "graduation" mechanics and viral livestream features made it the default Solana launchpad. Cumulative revenue crossed $500 million and reportedly approached $1 billion in 2024-2025 fees, putting it among the most profitable apps in crypto. The 2024 livestream controversy and the 2025 class-action lawsuit prompted policy changes. Pump.fun later shipped PumpSwap (its own DEX) and the PUMP token.
Daos.fun and DAO memecoins
Daos.fun extended the launchpad model to DAO memecoins, where contributors pool capital around a thesis (often AI agent or fund-style strategies) and a memecoin represents share of the DAO's wallet.
LetsBONK / Bonk.fun
LetsBONK and Bonk.fun, part of the Bonk ecosystem, are alternative Solana launchpads with their own bonding-curve mechanics and revenue-sharing back to BONK holders.
Moonshot
Moonshot and the Moonshot product are mobile-first Solana memecoin trading apps that focus on payment rails (Apple Pay, US debit cards) for retail users.
Believe and others
Believe, Boop.fun and Bags.app are emerging launchpads with niche features - creator coins, livestream-native launches, and DAO-style fundraising.
PumpSwap
PumpSwap is Pump.fun's purpose-built DEX, launched in 2025, where graduated tokens trade. Concentrating both launch and DEX revenue under one company turned Pump.fun into one of the largest revenue protocols in crypto.
Telegram trading bots and tools
Memecoins move so fast that humans rarely beat bots. The dominant tools in 2026 are:
- BONKbot and Bonk Bot - Telegram bots from the Bonk ecosystem.
- Photon - widely considered the fastest pro-grade Solana sniper UI.
- Trojan - long-time Telegram bot popular with active traders.
- BullX - feature-rich UI with portfolio analytics.
- GMGN.ai - sniper, charts and on-chain analytics combined.
- Maestro Bot - one of the older Telegram trading bots, multi-chain.
- BananaGun - early ETH and Solana sniper bot.
- Axiom - Solana-focused interface and exchange used by power users.
- DexScreener and Birdeye - charts and pair data.
Most of these tools also offer rug-checking, holder concentration analysis and sniper detection. Many take a 1% fee on trades, which is the dominant business model for memecoin trading infrastructure.
Memecoin economics
Insider trading and sniping
Launchpads create predictable bonding curves, so sniping bots can buy the first few blocks of a launch and resell into retail. Many launches show a few wallets controlling 30%+ of supply within minutes.
Rugpulls
A rugpull is when the token deployer drains liquidity, typically by removing LP from the AMM or selling a large pre-mined supply. Liquidity locks, LP burns and revoked mint/freeze authorities are the main on-chain defenses.
Narrative trading
Memecoins price cultural moments. The Solana memecoin season of 2024 saw POPCAT, MOODENG, GOAT and FARTCOIN run on viral threads or AI-agent posts. The TRUMP and MELANIA tokens repriced political news in real time.
AI agents and memecoins
The Truth Terminal experiment revealed that AI agents could autonomously promote tokens. AIXBT followed a similar pattern, with the aixbt agent building a market-research persona that retail traders followed. AI agent frameworks like ai16z / Eliza and ElizaOS gave developers ready-made tools for shipping agent personalities. Each of these tied a memecoin to the agent's reputation.
Why memecoins matter
Three reasons. First, they are crypto's biggest retail onboarding wedge in 2024-2026. Second, they create real-time markets for cultural narratives. Third, their fees fund the trading infrastructure the rest of the ecosystem relies on - charts, RPCs, sniper bots, even some L1 validator economics.
Risks and criticism
Memecoins are the highest-risk corner of crypto, and the honest list of risks is long:
- 95%+ go to zero. Survivorship bias makes the winners look like the rule when they are the rare exception.
- Rugpulls and exit liquidity. Deployers regularly drain liquidity or dump pre-allocated supply.
- Sniping and insider trading. Insiders and bots routinely buy the first few blocks and resell into public buyers.
- Narrative collapse. A meme that runs for a week may flatline for years.
- Manipulation. Pump-and-dump schemes are common, including coordinated Telegram and Discord groups.
- Regulatory crackdowns. Class-action lawsuits, SEC scrutiny and FTC influencer-disclosure rules have all become real concerns. The 2025 Pump.fun class-action is a notable test case.
- Ethics and politicization. Politically themed tokens raise concerns about insider trading, conflicts of interest and the politicization of crypto rails.
- Wallet hygiene. Approving sketchy contracts can drain wallets; many traders use disposable hot wallets segregated from main holdings.
How to research a memecoin
A short, practical workflow:
- Open the contract in DexScreener or Birdeye. Check liquidity, 24h volume, holder count and market cap.
- Check the deployer's wallet history. Repeat-deployers with rug history are red flags.
- Confirm liquidity is locked or LP burned. Confirm mint and freeze authorities are revoked.
- Look at the top 20 holders. >40% concentrated in fewer than 10 wallets is a structural warning.
- Search the original Twitter and Telegram threads. Real community discussion vs. paid shillers tells you a lot.
- Use a rug-check tool (RugCheck.xyz, Honeypot.is, GMGN's rug-check pane).
- Position size assuming the token can go to zero in 24 hours. Never trade with money you cannot afford to lose.
- Use a fresh hot wallet for memecoin trading; never grant unlimited approvals to unknown contracts.

FAQ
What is a memecoin?
A memecoin is a cryptocurrency whose value is driven primarily by community, attention and cultural narrative rather than any inherent utility, cash flow or business model. The category began with Dogecoin in 2013 and exploded in 2024-2025 thanks to Solana, Pump.fun and AI agents.
Why did memecoins explode in 2024-2025?
Three trends converged: Solana shipped block space cheap enough for sub-cent trading, Pump.fun made launching a token trivial, and AI agents on Twitter began promoting and even autonomously trading memecoins. The result was tens of thousands of new tokens per day at peak.
What are the biggest memecoins as of 2026?
DOGE and SHIB lead by all-time market cap. On Solana, BONK and WIF lead, followed by POPCAT, MOODENG, FARTCOIN and AI agent token AIXBT. PEPE leads on Ethereum, BRETT on Base. TRUMP and MELANIA hit multi-billion-dollar FDVs in January 2025.
What is Pump.fun?
Pump.fun, founded by Alon Cohen, is the dominant Solana memecoin launch platform. It crossed $500M in cumulative revenue, launched its own DEX (PumpSwap) and PUMP token, and faced regulatory and legal scrutiny including a 2025 class-action lawsuit and the 2024 livestream controversy.
What are AI agent memecoins?
AI agent memecoins are tokens tied to autonomous AI agents. Goatseus Maximus (launched by Truth Terminal in October 2024) is the canonical example. Others include Fartcoin, AIXBT by Virtuals Protocol, and the ai16z / Eliza family.
What are the most popular memecoin trading tools?
DexScreener and Birdeye for charts and on-chain data; BONKbot, Photon, Trojan, BullX, GMGN.ai, Maestro, BananaGun and Axiom for trading.
How do I research a memecoin before buying?
Check liquidity, holder concentration, mint and freeze authorities, deployer history, and lock or burn status of LP using DexScreener and dedicated rug-check tools. Position size assuming the token can go to zero in 24 hours.
Are memecoins regulated?
Memecoins exist in a regulatory grey zone. SEC guidance has shifted on whether most memecoins are "collectibles" rather than securities. State consumer protection, FTC influencer disclosure rules and class-action lawsuits provide additional checks.
How risky are memecoins?
Extremely risky. 95%+ lose substantially all value within months due to rugpulls, sniping, insider trading and narrative collapse. Use disposable wallets, never grant unlimited approvals to unknown contracts, and only trade with money you can afford to lose.
Why do memecoins matter beyond entertainment?
They are crypto's biggest retail onboarding wedge in 2024-2026, they create real-time markets for cultural narratives, and their fees fund the trading infrastructure (charts, RPCs, sniper bots) the broader ecosystem relies on.
