Buy Ledger

Step-by-step

  1. Step 1: Buy from the official Ledger store

Order only from ledger.com. Never buy from Amazon, eBay or third-party resellers — counterfeit and tampered devices have been documented. Verify the security seal on arrival.

  2. Step 2: Install the official desktop / mobile app

Download the companion app from the official site. Verify the GPG signature if listed. Connect the device by USB.

  3. Step 3: Initialize the device and generate a new seed

Choose "Set up as new device" — never use a pre-generated seed phrase that came with the device. The device generates a 24-word seed offline. Write each word down on the included recovery card with pen, in order.

  4. Step 4: Verify the seed phrase

The device asks you to type each word back to confirm you have written them correctly. Do not skip this step. Test 2-3 phrases.

  5. Step 5: Set a strong PIN

Choose a 4-8 digit PIN. After three wrong attempts, the device wipes itself — but your seed phrase always restores it. Optionally enable a passphrase (the "25th word") for plausible deniability.

  6. Step 6: Install firmware and apps

Update firmware to the latest version through the official app. Install the apps for the chains you need (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.). Each app holds the signing logic for that chain.

  7. Step 7: Receive a small test deposit

Generate a receive address. Send a small amount (e.g. $5) first. Confirm it arrives. Then send the full balance.

FAQ

Is Ledger safe in 2026?

Ledger is one of the most widely used and audited hardware wallets. Safety depends on the user: never type the seed phrase into any computer, never store it digitally, and verify every transaction prompt on the device screen before approving.

What if I lose my Ledger device?

As long as you have your 24-word seed phrase, you can restore your wallet on any compatible hardware or software wallet. The device itself holds no funds — only the seed does.

Can Ledger be hacked?

The hardware itself has never been remotely hacked, but supply-chain attacks (counterfeit devices) and social engineering (fake support emails asking for the seed) are real. Buy only from the official source and never share the seed.

What chains does Ledger support?

Ledger supports Ethereum and most EVM L2s (Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche). Hardware wallets support virtually every major chain via official and community apps.

Do I need to back up the seed if I use Ledger with a hardware wallet?

If you create a new account inside the software wallet, you create a new software-controlled key with its own seed — back that up. If you connect a hardware wallet as the signer, the hardware seed is your only backup; the software wallet is just the UI.
