Safe vs Zodiac: 2026 Comparison

Last reviewed: 2026-07-15

Safe and Zodiac are often compared but they are not really substitutes — they are complements. Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) is the dominant smart-contract multi-sig wallet on Ethereum and EVM L2s, securing ~$100B+ in DAO and institutional treasuries through Safe{Wallet} v1.4, modular guards + plugins, and the cleanest professional UX in the multi-sig category. Zodiac (built by Gnosis Guild) is a suite of modules that EXTENDS a Safe — Reality.eth, Roles, Bridge, Tellor, Connext, the Cross-Chain Module — adding programmable governance capabilities that vanilla Safes do not have. Most users do not pick "Safe or Zodiac" — they use Zodiac modules ON TOP of an existing Safe to get governance features that the base Safe does not provide. The comparison below frames them honestly as a use-both stack.

Where Safe wins

Where Zodiac wins

Best for which user

Choose Safe if:

You need a treasury multi-sig with mature UX, are running a DAO or institutional treasury and need M-of-N signing, want the cleanest professional signing workflow in the industry, or value the largest dApp-integration matrix.

Choose Zodiac if:

You ALREADY have a Safe and need governance modules on top — granular role-based permissions (Roles), optimistic on-chain proposals (Reality.eth), cross-chain DAO control (Connext / Cross-Chain Module), or oracle-driven automatic actions (Tellor).

Use both (typical):

Most DAOs running programmable governance use Zodiac AS Safe extensions, not as alternatives. Set up a Safe as the base treasury account, then attach Zodiac modules to give it the governance capabilities your DAO needs. This is the standard pattern at Gnosis DAO, ENS, Balancer and many others.

Pricing detail

Both are free to use beyond Ethereum gas. Safe{Wallet} is free for end-users with no protocol fees on signing or execution. Zodiac modules are open-source contracts that you deploy on-chain and attach to your Safe — the only cost is the deployment gas plus per-call gas at execution time. Some Zodiac modules (e.g., Reality.eth) require small bonds in DAI for proposal-bonding, which is returned if the proposal is correct. There is no per-Safe or per-module subscription fee on either side. Cost is essentially gas-only.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Zodiac without Safe?

Not really. Zodiac modules are designed to attach to a Safe (or Safe-compatible smart-contract account). They are not a replacement for a multi-sig wallet — they are extensions that give a Safe additional capabilities. If you want programmable governance without a Safe, you would need to write custom contracts; Zodiac is not the tool for that.

What's the difference between Safe and Zodiac?

Safe is the base smart-contract account — the multi-sig wallet that holds your assets and requires M-of-N signatures to move them. Zodiac is a suite of modules that extends a Safe with extra capabilities (role-based permissions, optimistic governance, cross-chain control, oracle-driven actions). Safe = the account; Zodiac = governance/automation layers on top.

Is Zodiac a Safe competitor?

No — Zodiac is built on top of Safe by Gnosis Guild, the same broader Gnosis ecosystem that originally built Gnosis Safe. The relationship is complementary, not competitive. Most production deployments use Zodiac modules on a Safe, not instead of one.

What is Reality.eth and how does it work with Zodiac?

Reality.eth is an optimistic oracle — anyone can post a question (or proposal) and stake a bond. If no one challenges within the resolution window, the answer is accepted. The Zodiac Reality Module connects this to a Safe: a DAO posts a proposal on Reality.eth, and if it resolves true, the Safe automatically executes it. This is how Gnosis DAO (via SafeSnap) and other DAOs run on-chain governance without needing a quorum to vote on every action.

Do I need both Safe and Zodiac for my DAO?

You always need a Safe (or equivalent multi-sig) as the base treasury account. You need Zodiac only if you want extra governance capabilities — granular role-based permissions, optimistic proposals, cross-chain control. Many DAOs start with just a Safe and add Zodiac modules later as governance needs evolve. The typical pattern is "Safe first, Zodiac when you need it."

Incident history side-by-side

Safe: 2 indexed incident(s) — both were compromises of Safe-based signing setups (Bybit via a compromised Safe{Wallet} developer machine/UI; WazirX via its multisig signing workflow), not exploits of the audited Safe contracts themselves.

Zodiac: 0 major incidents indexed.

Adding Zodiac to a Safe (there is no “switch”)

  1. Keep your Safe. Zodiac is not a replacement for Safe — you do not migrate off a Safe to use it. Zodiac modules attach to the Safe you already have; your assets never move.
  2. Enable modules from within Safe{Wallet}. Open your Safe, use the Zodiac Safe App to deploy and enable the module you need (e.g. Roles, Reality, Delay). Enabling a module is itself a Safe transaction that requires your normal M-of-N signatures.
  3. Scope and test permissions carefully. An enabled module can execute transactions from your Safe without per-transaction signer approval, so review its parameters (roles, oracle, timeout/delay windows) on a low-value test Safe first and audit exactly who can call it.
