Overview

Algorand is a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain founded in 2017 by MIT cryptographer Silvio Micali, with a public testnet in April 2019 and mainnet launch in June 2019. Its consensus is a Byzantine agreement protocol built on cryptographic sortition: participants are randomly and secretly selected in proportion to their stake to propose and validate blocks, without advance notice of selection, which makes targeted attacks on known validators impractical. Consensus proceeds in three phases — block proposal, where selected nodes submit candidates; proposal filtering, where committees vote on the highest-priority block; and certification, where validators confirm validity. The design deliberately prioritises consistency over availability: rather than risk a fork, the chain enters recovery mode if consensus stalls, so Algorand does not fork. Its native token is ALGO, which in March 2026 was jointly classified by US regulators as a digital commodity rather than a security. Real-world deployments cited include World Chess (2019), Italian olive oil supply chain verification (2021), Australia Zoo NFTs (2022) and Indian digital health initiatives (2024). The protocol is written in Go and developed openly at github.com/algorand/go-algorand. Founded 2017 by Silvio Micali; testnet April 2019, mainnet June 2019. Notable deployments include World Chess (2019), Italian olive oil traceability (2021), Australia Zoo NFTs (2022) and Indian digital health (2024). In March 2026 US regulators jointly classified ALGO as a digital commodity rather than a security.
