Overview

Astar Network is a blockchain that set out to be Polkadot's 'smart contract hub', operating as a Polkadot parachain, with ASTR as its native token. Development is led by a team headed by Sota Watanabe. The project originally launched under the name Plasm Network and rebranded to Astar Network in September 2021; its mainnet opened to the public on 17 January 2022. Technically, Astar's distinguishing feature is dual smart-contract support: it provides both EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) and WASM (WebAssembly) environments to Polkadot, so applications and contracts written for Ethereum can be migrated easily while WASM-native contracts are also supported — the basis for its multi-chain smart contract hub positioning. ASTR is used to pay transaction gas, to propose and vote on network policy as a governance token, and as a staking reward. Astar's signature economic mechanism is dApp staking, which rewards both developers and users for staking ASTR toward specific dApps and integrated infrastructure, so stakers support builders directly while earning rewards. The network began as Plasm Network, rebranded to Astar Network in September 2021, and opened its mainnet to the public on 17 January 2022 as a Polkadot parachain.
