Overview
Bitlayer is a Bitcoin layer-2 scaling network built on the BitVM framework, which executes complex computation off-chain and verifies it on Bitcoin mainnet, enabling Turing-complete smart contracts and fast transactions anchored to Bitcoin security. Its central product is the BitVM Bridge, whose mainnet launched in July 2025, providing a trust-minimised framework for bringing bitcoin liquidity into DeFi: BTC is locked in a smart contract and security relies on a fraud-proof design in which honest participants can expose fraudulent behaviour. The bridge issues YBTC, a token pegged 1:1 with BTC that lets holders use bitcoin in DeFi. YBTC is distinct from BTR, Bitlayer's native token, which is used for governance (proposal voting and protocol adjustments), fees and staking, and to reward ecosystem participants. Bitlayer also published a Network V2 whitepaper and previewed V3 at its Summer Launch 2025 event. As of February 2026 it reported over $360 million in TVL, more than 700,000 community members and over 300 dApps spanning RWA lending to gaming. Bitlayer built a BitVM-based Bitcoin layer 2 and launched its BitVM Bridge mainnet in July 2025, introducing the 1:1 BTC-pegged YBTC token. At Summer Launch 2025 it also revealed the Bitlayer Network V2 whitepaper and a V3 preview. By February 2026 it reported over $360 million TVL and 300+ dApps.
