BOB chain
Overview
BOB, which stands for Build on Bitcoin, is a hybrid layer-2 chain designed to combine Bitcoin's security with Ethereum's application ecosystem. It launched as an Ethereum layer 2 built with the OP Stack and has since upgraded to a hybrid ZK rollup using Kailua, inheriting Bitcoin finality while offering trust-minimised bridges to both Ethereum and Bitcoin. Architecturally it defaults to Ethereum for data availability but lets users force-include transactions on BOB via special Bitcoin transactions, which gives censorship resistance and guarantees users can exit funds even if BOB's sequencer goes offline. Its BitVM bridge is described as operating under a 1-of-n security model, meaning BTC deposits cannot be stolen so long as a single honest and online node remains in the network. The rollout is staged: phase 1 bootstraps as an ETH rollup, phase 2 adds Bitcoin proof-of-work security and economic alignment via merged mining, and phase 3 delivers a hybrid L2 settling on both Bitcoin and Ethereum using BitVM. BOB joined the Optimism Superchain as its first hybrid layer 2. BOB launched as an OP Stack Ethereum rollup, joined the Optimism Superchain as the first hybrid layer 2, and later upgraded to a hybrid ZK rollup with Kailua. Its published roadmap moves from ETH rollup, through merged mining with Bitcoin, to settlement on both Bitcoin and Ethereum secured by BitVM.
