Overview

Tezos is an open-source blockchain that executes peer-to-peer transactions and serves as a platform for deploying smart contracts, created by Arthur and Kathleen Breitman and first proposed in 2014. Arthur Breitman, then working at Morgan Stanley, published the foundational papers under the pseudonym 'L. M. Goodman'. The Tezos Foundation raised $232 million in Bitcoin and Ethereum in an ICO that began on 1 July 2017 — one of the largest of that era. Technically, Tezos uses liquid proof-of-stake consensus and is best known for on-chain self-amendment: when a protocol upgrade proposal receives sufficient community votes, the protocol updates itself to incorporate the code changes, avoiding contentious hard forks. The testnet launched in June 2018 and mainnet went live in September 2018. The native currency is tez (symbol XTZ, ꜩ), with circulating supply of approximately 1 billion tez as of May 2024. The 2017 ICO was followed by disputes over whether contributions were 'non-refundable donations' or investments subject to securities law, and by a governance fight between the Breitmans and foundation president Johann Gevers that produced lawsuits; the foundation settled in 2020 for $25 million without admitting wrongdoing. Tezos later pursued mainstream visibility through sports sponsorships, including Manchester United — reportedly worth over £20 million annually — and the New York Mets, tied to NFT initiatives.
