Overview
World Chain is an Ethereum layer-2 rollup built by Tools for Humanity, the company behind Worldcoin/World, on Optimism's OP Stack. Announced in April 2024 and launched in October 2024, it settles to Ethereum and sits inside the Optimism Superchain, with Worldcoin having publicly committed to the Superchain vision ahead of mainnet. Its distinguishing feature is that it redesigns the gas market around verified human identity: users who have proven personhood via an iris scan at an Orb device and hold a World ID receive priority blockspace and a gas allowance for casual transactions, while bots still transact but pay more and never get priority. This is implemented through a custom block builder that orders transactions by a humanity score. At announcement the network said more than five million verified World ID holders would benefit. The project has attracted regulatory scrutiny in several jurisdictions over its biometric identity model. The Worldcoin Foundation announced World Chain in April 2024 and released a developer preview, committing to Optimism's Superchain ahead of launch. Mainnet launched in October 2024 as an OP Stack rollup with a custom block builder prioritising World ID-verified humans.
