Bitso is Latin America's largest cryptocurrency exchange, founded in Mexico City in 2014 by Daniel Vogel, Ben Peters and Pablo González, with Vogel serving as chief executive. It operates as a crypto and financial 'super-app' across the region, serving around 9 million users in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia. The company has raised approximately $331 million in total, headlined by a $250 million Series C in 2021 led by Tiger Global and Coatue at a $2.2 billion valuation, which made Bitso Latin America's first crypto unicorn; an earlier 2019 strategic round was led by Ripple, Coinbase Ventures and Jump Capital. Bitso is unusually heavily regulated for a crypto exchange, holding licences from Gibraltar's GFSC, Mexico's CNBV, Argentina's CNV, and in Brazil — and it was the first Latin American company, and one of few crypto platforms anywhere, to be regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission under its Distributed Ledger Technology framework. It expanded into Brazil in 2020 and Argentina in 2021.
