Overview

Blockstream is a blockchain technology company co-founded in 2014 by cryptographer Adam Back together with Bitcoin developers and cryptographers including Pieter Wuille and Gregory Maxwell. It develops infrastructure for the Bitcoin network — sidechains, privacy enhancements and both institutional and consumer tools — and employs Bitcoin Core developers. Its headquarters is in Menlo Park, California, with offices in Lugano and Tokyo. Its flagship product is the Liquid Network, a Bitcoin sidechain first announced as a prototype on 12 October 2015 and launched in production form on 11 October 2018, which supports settlement, confidential transactions and tokenised asset issuance with one-minute blocks versus Bitcoin's ten. Liquid is built on Elements, Blockstream's open-source sidechain platform introducing Confidential Transactions, Segregated Witness, native asset issuance and new opcodes. Other products include Blockstream Jade (an open-source air-gapped hardware wallet introduced in 2021), the Blockstream App (formerly Green, a non-custodial mobile wallet), Core Lightning and Greenlight for Lightning nodes, and Blockstream Satellite, which broadcasts the Bitcoin blockchain by satellite — extended in 2018 to four satellites across six coverage zones. Blockstream raised $21 million in seed funding in 2014, then $210 million in a Series B in August 2021 at a $3.2 billion valuation from investors including Horizons Ventures and AXA Strategic Ventures. In October 2024 it raised a further $210 million via a convertible note led by Fulgur Ventures, earmarked for layer-2 technologies, mining and a bitcoin treasury. It partnered with Intercontinental Exchange on a crypto market data feed in early 2018 and with Digital Garage in January 2019 to create Crypto Garage for the Japanese institutional market.
