Overview
Coinbase Global, Inc. is the largest US cryptocurrency exchange and a Nasdaq-listed public company, founded in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong, a former Airbnb engineer, and Fred Ehrsam, previously of Goldman Sachs, with $150,000 of Y Combinator funding. It went public on 14 April 2021 through a direct listing on Nasdaq under ticker COIN, at a $250 reference price implying roughly $47 billion, and closed its first day at $328.28. The company has been remote-first since May 2020, though by June 2025 it leased offices in San Francisco and Charlotte while about 95% of its nearly 4,000 employees still worked remotely. Beyond retail and institutional trading, Coinbase runs custody, stablecoin and staking businesses and launched its own Ethereum layer-2 network, Base, in February 2023 on Optimism's OP Stack. For 2024 it reported $6.56 billion of revenue and $2.58 billion of net income, with roughly $404 billion of digital assets on platform, including more than 12% of all bitcoin in existence. The SEC sued Coinbase in June 2023 alleging it operated as an unregistered broker and exchange; the case was dismissed in February 2025 following the change in US administration. On 8 May 2025 Coinbase announced the acquisition of Dubai-based derivatives exchange Deribit for $700 million in cash plus $2.2 billion in stock, and on 19 May 2025 it was added to the S&P 500 index.
