US Department of Justice company
Overview
The United States Department of Justice is the executive department responsible for federal law enforcement and the administration of justice, functioning as the country's justice ministry. Congress created it on 1 July 1870 under President Ulysses S. Grant, although the office of Attorney General dates to the Judiciary Act of 1789. It is headed by the Attorney General, who sits in the Cabinet and reports to the President; Todd Blanche has served as Acting Attorney General while also holding the Deputy Attorney General role. Its components include the FBI, DEA, US Marshals Service, ATF and Bureau of Prisons, litigating divisions covering criminal, civil, civil rights, antitrust, tax, national security and environmental matters, and 94 US Attorneys' offices across the federal judicial districts. It employs roughly 113,114 people on a FY2024 budget of $37.52 billion. For crypto specifically, the DOJ established a National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team in October 2021, and it is the agency that brings criminal cases against exchanges — for example OKX's February 2025 guilty plea to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. Established 1 July 1870, the DOJ absorbed federal legal functions previously scattered across agencies. It launched a dedicated Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team in October 2021 to pursue digital-asset crime, and has brought major crypto prosecutions, including the case that led OKX to plead guilty in February 2025 and pay over $500 million in forfeiture and fines.
