Modulus Labs company
Overview
Modulus Labs was a cryptography company specialising in zero-knowledge machine learning (zkML), building systems that use cryptographic proofs to verify that AI model outputs had not been tampered with, so that smart contracts could rely on AI results without trusting the party running the model - in the company's own framing, using cryptography to verify that AI results were not doctored. It was co-founded by Daniel Shorr and Ryan Cao roughly two years before its exit, with a team of cryptographers and researchers including Giorgos Zirdelis, Ben Wilson and Makis Arsenis, and advisors including Zhenfei Zhang and Riad Wahby. Investors included 1kx, Variant Fund, Floodgate and Inflection, alongside angels connected to the Ethereum Foundation, Polygon, Solana and Microsoft. Early users of its proving technology included Upshot for NFT appraisals, Worldcoin for identity authentication, Ion Protocol and AI Arena. Modulus Labs no longer exists as an independent company: it was acquired by Tools for Humanity in December 2024. Modulus Labs was founded by Daniel Shorr and Ryan Cao and became one of the best-known zkML research teams, shipping demonstrations of verifiable AI inference and partnering with Upshot, Worldcoin, Ion Protocol and AI Arena. In December 2024 it was acquired by Tools for Humanity, where the team now forms the Applied Research division working on World Network's human verification systems.
