Overview
OP Labs is the core engineering company behind Optimism, the Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem. It develops the OP Stack — an open-source, modular framework for deploying Ethereum-equivalent optimistic rollups that defines every layer of a rollup from transaction sequencing through to posting state roots on Ethereum — and ships the security and performance upgrades that every OP Stack chain inherits. It also offers OP Enterprise for institutional chain operators. OP Labs does not own the ecosystem: governance and treasury sit with the Optimism Collective, which has allocated over 850 million OP tokens to ecosystem support through Retro Funding and directed roughly $14 million in net Superchain sequencer revenue captured in Q1 2026 to retroactive public goods funding. The OP Stack has been adopted well beyond Optimism itself, with Base, Unichain, World Chain, Soneium, OP Mainnet, Celo and Ink all building on it. OP Labs built OP Mainnet and then open-sourced the underlying architecture as the OP Stack, which became the basis for the Superchain. Kraken received 25 million OP tokens — worth $100 million at the time — for building on the OP Stack, and major chains including Base, Unichain, World Chain, Soneium, Celo and Ink now run on it.
