Polychain Capital is a San Francisco-based investment firm focused on blockchain assets, founded in 2016 by Olaf Carlson-Wee, who had been Coinbase's first employee. It was the first crypto fund to reach $1 billion in assets and runs both liquid-token and venture strategies. Assets under management have been volatile with the market: Polychain claimed about $1 billion in 2017, fell to $592 million at the end of 2018 as holdings dropped in value, recovered to roughly $4 billion by April 2021, and stood at around $5 billion as of 2024. Carlson-Wee remains founder and CEO. Bloomberg reported in May 2024 that the firm made payouts to investors in two of its funds. Polychain remains one of the longest-running dedicated crypto investment firms. Olaf Carlson-Wee left Coinbase, where he was employee number one, and founded Polychain in 2016. It became the first billion-dollar crypto fund in 2017, shrank to $592 million by end-2018 in the bear market, rebuilt to about $4 billion by April 2021 and roughly $5 billion by 2024. In May 2024 Bloomberg reported distributions to investors in two of its funds.
