Overview
Ripple Labs is a San Francisco-headquartered enterprise blockchain company founded in 2012 by Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb, originally under the name OpenCoin, and led by CEO Brad Garlinghouse with Monica Long as president. The company builds enterprise products on the XRP Ledger and other networks, with XRP serving as the native cryptocurrency of its payment protocol, and it has expanded into custody, prime brokerage, stablecoins and corporate treasury through acquisition. Its defining legal event was the SEC's December 2020 lawsuit alleging a $1.3 billion unregistered securities offering; in July 2023 a judge ruled that XRP sold on public exchanges did not constitute a security, and the case settled in August 2025 with Ripple paying a $125 million fine and the SEC ending further appeals. Ripple has also become one of crypto's largest political donors, contributing $25 million to the Fairshake super PAC in December 2023 and $5 million to Trump's 2025 inaugural fund. Founded as OpenCoin in 2012, Ripple built payment infrastructure around the XRP Ledger and fought a five-year SEC lawsuit from December 2020 to its August 2025 settlement. It has since acquired aggressively: Metaco (crypto custody, $250 million) in May 2023, Rail (stablecoin payments, $200 million) in August 2025, Hidden Road (prime brokerage, $1.25 billion) and GTreasury (treasury management, $1 billion) in October 2025, and Palisade (digital asset custody, undisclosed) in November 2025.
