Overview
Standard Custody & Trust Company is a New York-chartered limited purpose trust company providing regulated digital-asset custody, and is now a Ripple subsidiary. Its New York Limited Purpose Trust Charter — one of only about nine crypto trust charters granted by the New York Department of Financial Services — together with money transmitter licences is what made it strategically valuable. The technology behind Standard Custody was architected by Arthur Britto and David Schwartz, both co-creators of the XRP Ledger. Ripple announced its acquisition of the company on 13 February 2024 and closed the deal on 11 June 2024; terms were not disclosed. The purchase followed Ripple's 2023 acquisition of Swiss custody technology firm Metaco and was explicitly framed as expanding Ripple's portfolio of regulatory licences in the United States. Standard Custody therefore no longer operates as an independent company; it is the licensed U.S. trust vehicle within Ripple's custody and stablecoin business. Ripple agreed to acquire Standard Custody & Trust Company on 13 February 2024 and completed the acquisition on 11 June 2024, adding a New York limited purpose trust charter and money transmitter licences to a licence portfolio that already included Metaco (acquired 2023).
