Overview
Terraform Labs was the Singapore-incorporated company behind the Terra blockchain, the LUNA token and the algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (UST). It was co-founded in January 2018 by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin, with the Terra chain's initial release on 24 April 2019 and UST launched in 2020. UST held its dollar peg not with cash reserves but through a mint-and-burn arbitrage with LUNA, and demand was driven largely by the Anchor protocol's roughly 20% advertised yield. The design failed catastrophically: UST began losing its peg on 9 May 2022, LUNA fell from an all-time high of $119.51 to near zero within a week, wiping out close to $45 billion of market capitalisation, and the blockchain was temporarily halted on 13 May 2022. Terraform Labs filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 21 January 2024 with assets and liabilities each listed in the $100-500 million range, and in June 2024, after a fraud verdict, Terraform and Kwon were ordered to pay about $4.5 billion in the SEC's case. The company is defunct and in wind-down; Do Kwon pleaded guilty to two fraud charges in August 2025, agreed to forfeit $19 million, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison on 11 December 2025.
