Overview
Worldpay is an American multinational financial technology and payment processing company providing payment and technology services to merchants and financial institutions globally, generating 40 billion transactions across 146 countries and 135 currencies. It reported $4.9 billion in revenue in 2023 with 8,500 employees, and ranks among the world's largest non-bank merchant acquirers, processing $2.2 trillion in transactions annually. It is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, with international headquarters in London and 40 offices across 25 countries. Its ownership has changed: on 12 January 2026 Global Payments announced it had completed its acquisition of Worldpay; before that the company was co-owned by GTCR (55%) and FIS (45%). Note also that 'Worldpay' has referred to two related companies — the former UK Worldpay Group, and the American Worldpay, Inc. formed when Vantiv acquired it. The lineage runs from Midwest Payment Systems, formed by Fifth Third Bank in 1971, which became Fifth Third Processing Solutions in 2003, spun off as a joint venture with Advent International in 2009, was renamed Vantiv in June 2011 and listed on the NYSE in March 2012. Vantiv acquired Litle & Co. ($361M, 2012), Mercury Payment Systems ($1.65bn, 2014), Moneris' US operations (2016), and then UK-based Worldpay for $10.4 billion — announced July 2017 and completed 16 January 2018, when it took the Worldpay, Inc. name. Global Payments completed its acquisition of Worldpay on 12 January 2026.
