Overview

Celestia is a modular blockchain network built specifically for data availability: rather than executing or validating transactions itself, it provides a scalable layer where other blockchains publish transaction data and prove it is available. This separates the functions that monolithic chains like Bitcoin and Ethereum bundle together — execution, settlement, consensus and data availability — so rollups can use Celestia purely for the data layer. Its key technique is data availability sampling, which lets light nodes verify that a block's data has been published by sampling small random portions rather than downloading the whole block, so security scales with the number of nodes. The project originated in 2019 when Mustafa Al-Bassam published a whitepaper on a distributed data availability ledger called LazyLedger; co-founders include Al-Bassam, Ismail Khoffi and John Adler. LazyLedger rebranded to Celestia in June 2021, and mainnet launched on 31 October 2023, with TIA tokens airdropped the same day. Celestia raised $55 million led by Bain Capital Crypto and Polychain Capital, with Galaxy, Placeholder and Jump Crypto also participating.
