Overview

The Cosmos SDK is a modular, open-source framework for building secure, high-performance distributed ledgers and blockchains, and is the application layer of the wider interchain stack. Rather than deploying a contract onto someone else's chain, developers use it to build a purpose-built blockchain with custom business logic that can interoperate natively with other chains via the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol. It pairs with CometBFT, a Byzantine fault tolerant consensus engine, which handles networking and consensus while the SDK handles state transition logic. The framework ships predefined modules covering standard functionality such as permissioning, tokenisation, compliance and state management, and developers can write custom modules for anything not covered. It is maintained by Cosmos Labs, a subsidiary of the Interchain Foundation, the Swiss non-profit that oversees treasury management and governance for the Cosmos ecosystem. More than 200 chains are live in production using the Cosmos stack.
