Hyperliquid protocol
Overview
Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange (DEX) for perpetual futures trading, operating on its own purpose-built Layer 1 blockchain. It uses an on-chain order book model to offer low-latency trading, differentiating it from many DEXs that rely on automated market makers. The protocol is designed for high throughput and capital efficiency in derivatives markets.
Within the DeFi Intel graph, Hyperliquid connects to 30 tracked entities, most strongly to Hyperliquid L1 and its native HYPE token.

Frequently asked questions
Who founded Hyperliquid?
Hyperliquid was founded by Jeff Yan, a former Hudson River Trading algorithm developer who studied mathematics and computer science at Harvard.
Does Hyperliquid run on Ethereum?
No. Hyperliquid built its own Layer 1 blockchain so that the full order book, matching engine and settlement layer operate on-chain rather than on an external chain.
Did Hyperliquid raise venture funding?
No. Hyperliquid was bootstrapped by its founder, and no venture funds received allocations in the HYPE token launch in late 2024.
