BuilderNet protocol
Overview
BuilderNet is a decentralised block building network for Ethereum, introduced by Flashbots and operated in its first mainnet release by Flashbots, Beaverbuild and Nethermind. It exists to counter centralisation in Ethereum's proposer-builder separation model, where a small number of builders construct most blocks — Beaverbuild and Titan Builder alone accounted for roughly 88% of blocks at the time of BuilderNet's announcement. Each participating node runs its own block-building instance inside a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), which lets nodes share order flow while keeping transactions provably private, and coordinates so that MEV and gas fees are redistributed rather than captured by a single builder. Users are refunded the value their order flow contributes to the final value of the blocks. Flashbots has said it plans to extend the model to layer 2s via Rollup-Boost to make decentralised sequencing more accessible, and that operations will eventually be permissionless. Flashbots unveiled BuilderNet as a response to Ethereum block-builder centralisation, launching its first mainnet release operated jointly by Flashbots, Beaverbuild and Nethermind, with plans to extend to L2 sequencing via Rollup-Boost and to make node operation permissionless over time.
