MICA license
Overview
MiCA (the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) creates a harmonised authorisation regime for crypto-asset service providers, or CASPs, across all 27 EU member states. The CASP portion of MiCA became applicable on 30 December 2024; from that date, firms may provide crypto-asset services in the EU only after obtaining authorisation from a national competent authority, or — for certain services and entity types such as credit institutions, investment firms and market operators — after notifying that authority. A MiCA CASP licence carries EU-wide passporting rights, allowing a firm authorised in one member state to serve the whole bloc. Member states may operate a transitional grandfathering period allowing firms lawfully operating under national law before 30 December 2024 to continue until 1 July 2026 or until their MiCA application is granted or refused, whichever comes first.
