Banque de France organization
Overview
The Banque de France is France's national central bank, founded on 18 January 1800, and has been governed by Francois Villeroy de Galhau since 1 November 2015. As a member of the Eurosystem it contributes to the design of euro area monetary policy and implements European Central Bank decisions in France, and it prints euro banknotes in larger volumes than any of its Eurosystem peers. Beyond monetary policy it carries out banking supervision functions, financial stability work and services to the public, and it has established a blockchain system and an innovation Lab to explore new technologies. In digital currency it has been among the most active central banks: it launched a programme of wholesale central bank digital currency experiments in 2020, and it partnered with the Swiss National Bank and the BIS Innovation Hub on Project Jura, which in November 2021 settled real-value euro and Swiss franc wholesale CBDC transactions on a third-party DLT platform using payment-versus-payment and delivery-versus-payment mechanisms, with results published on 8 December 2021. Founded in 1800, the Banque de France became the French national central bank within the Eurosystem after the euro's introduction. It began a series of wholesale CBDC experiments in 2020 and concluded the cross-border Project Jura experiment with the SNB and BIS Innovation Hub in December 2021.
