Overview
Robert Leshner is an American entrepreneur who founded Compound, one of the earliest DeFi lending protocols, and now co-founds and leads the tokenised asset manager Superstate. He studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania, worked as a public finance analyst and consulted at McKinsey & Company before building Compound in 2017 as an algorithmic, pool-based money market where suppliers and borrowers transact against interest-rate curves rather than counterparties. He was founder and CEO of Compound Labs until stepping down from that role in 2023. Leshner then co-founded Superstate with Jim Hiltner and Dean Swennumson; Superstate is an SEC-registered investment adviser and transfer agent, headquartered in New York City, that issues tokenised investment products (USTB, USCC and CUSHY) and runs 'Opening Bell', an issuance platform for bringing public equities onchain. Superstate is backed by investors including Bain Capital Crypto, Haun Ventures and Galaxy. Leshner developed Compound in 2017 and it became one of the largest DeFi lending markets; he stepped down as Compound Labs CEO in 2023. He subsequently co-founded Superstate, which describes its mission as connecting financial assets with crypto capital markets through onchain public listings and tokenised funds.
