Overview

Samuel Benjamin Bankman-Fried, widely known as SBF, is an American entrepreneur convicted of one of the largest financial frauds in US history. Born 5 March 1992 in Stanford, California to two Stanford Law School professors, he graduated from MIT in 2014 with a physics degree and a mathematics minor, then traded ETFs at Jane Street Capital. In November 2017 he co-founded the quantitative trading firm Alameda Research, and in April 2019 founded the FTX cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, which opened the following month; by 2021 he owned roughly 90% of Alameda. FTX grew into one of the world's largest exchanges and Bankman-Fried became the 41st-richest American on the Forbes 400, but in November 2022 revelations that customer deposits had been funnelled to Alameda triggered a bank run. On 11 November 2022 FTX, Alameda Research and more than 130 affiliated entities filed for bankruptcy. He is currently incarcerated at Federal Correctional Institution Lompoc I. Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas on 12 December 2022 and faced seven criminal counts including wire fraud, securities fraud, commodities fraud and money laundering. He was convicted on all seven counts on 2 November 2023 and sentenced on 28 March 2024 to 25 years in prison plus forfeiture of $11.02 billion. He filed an appeal on 11 April 2024, which was denied on 12 June 2026.
