Overview
Shayne Coplan is the American founder and CEO of Polymarket, the crypto-based prediction market he established in June 2020. Polymarket is headquartered in Manhattan with legal domicile in Panama, and runs its outcome-share markets on the Polygon blockchain, where users deposit cryptocurrency and trade binary shares whose prices track the market-implied probability of events in politics, sports, weather and geopolitics. Coplan built the platform through an early regulatory clash: in January 2022 the CFTC fined Polymarket $1.4 million and issued a cease-and-desist order for operating an unregistered swap execution facility, after which the company blocked US users from 2022 until 2 December 2025. The platform's breakout moment was the 2024 US presidential election, when more than $3.3 billion was wagered on the Trump-Harris race by 5 November 2024. By May 2024 Polymarket had raised $70 million across two rounds from backers including Vitalik Buterin and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, and in October 2025 Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the NYSE, agreed to invest up to $2 billion at an $8 billion valuation. In January 2022 the CFTC settled with Polymarket for $1.4 million over unregistered swap execution facility charges, prompting the company to geo-block US users. On 13 November 2024, days after the US election, the FBI raided Coplan's home and seized his phone as part of an investigation into whether US-based users had been permitted to trade. Polymarket reopened to US users on 2 December 2025, and in October 2025 ICE invested up to $2 billion at an $8 billion valuation.
