Overview
Grayscale Ethereum Trust ETF (ticker ETHE) is a US spot ether exchange-traded product run by Grayscale Investments. It existed for years as a closed-end trust before converting into a spot ETF that began trading on 23 July 2024, the day the first US spot ether ETFs launched. Grayscale kept its 2.5% sponsor fee on conversion — by far the highest in the category, against 0.25% for BlackRock and Fidelity's ether funds, 0.20% for VanEck and Bitwise and 0.19% for Franklin Templeton — and the fund entered the ETF market with roughly $9.1 billion in seed assets. That fee gap drove immediate redemptions: ETHE saw about $484 million of outflows on its first day and $327 million on its second, roughly $811 million in two days. Grayscale simultaneously launched a lower-cost sibling, the Grayscale Ethereum Mini Trust (ticker ETH) at a 0.15% fee, which took in $45.9 million on its second trading day. ETHE operated as a closed-end Grayscale trust before converting to a spot ETF that started trading 23 July 2024. Grayscale retained the 2.5% fee, prompting large early outflows while assets rotated into cheaper competitors and into Grayscale's own 0.15% Ethereum Mini Trust.
