Overview
HODL is the VanEck Bitcoin ETF, a US spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund that launched on 11 January 2024 on the Cboe BZX Exchange as part of the first cohort of spot bitcoin ETFs approved by the SEC. Rather than using futures, it holds physical bitcoin in cold storage with qualified custodians, so shares track the spot bitcoin price less expenses. VanEck seeded the fund with $72.5 million, the largest seed capital among the January 2024 spot bitcoin ETFs. Its standard expense ratio is 0.20%; at launch it was priced at 0.25%, and VanEck has run a fee waiver on the first $2.5 billion of assets through 31 July 2026. Reported assets have been around the $1 billion mark. The ticker HODL is a nod to the crypto community's long-standing 'hodl' meme for holding through volatility, and VanEck's launch materials leaned on it directly ('Time to HODL'). Launched 11 January 2024 on Cboe BZX alongside the other first-wave US spot bitcoin ETFs, seeded with $72.5 million. Its fee moved from 0.25% at launch to a 0.20% standard rate, with a waiver on the first $2.5 billion running through 31 July 2026.
