Mastercard Crypto Credential product
Overview
Mastercard Crypto Credential is a verification and addressing service that replaces long blockchain wallet addresses with human-readable aliases and attaches verified identity attestations to crypto transfers. Mastercard first introduced the concept in 2023 and announced the first live peer-to-peer transactions in May 2024, when the service went live on the exchanges Bit2Me, Lirium and Mercado Bitcoin. Under the scheme, a user's exchange verifies them against Mastercard Crypto Credential standards and issues an alias; when a transfer is initiated, the system checks that the recipient's alias is valid and that the receiving wallet supports the asset and chain involved, and if not the sender is warned before funds move. The service also supports exchange of Travel Rule information for cross-border transactions, the regulatory requirement that originator and beneficiary data accompany virtual-asset transfers. At launch the live corridors covered users in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, France, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Uruguay, and Mastercard said it intended to extend availability to more than 7 million users across participating exchanges. Brazilian wallet provider Foxbit subsequently joined the pilot ecosystem. Mastercard introduced Crypto Credential in 2023 and took it live with its first peer-to-peer pilot transactions in May 2024 across Bit2Me, Lirium and Mercado Bitcoin, spanning 13 countries in Europe and Latin America. Mastercard has said it plans to extend the credential framework beyond P2P transfers to areas such as NFTs and ticketing, subject to market and compliance requirements.
