Project Atom project
Overview
Project Atom was a wholesale central bank digital currency research project run by the Reserve Bank of Australia with Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank, Perpetual and ConsenSys, with legal input from King & Wood Mallesons. It built a proof of concept in which a tokenised wholesale CBDC was issued on an Ethereum-based DLT platform and used for the funding, settlement and repayment of a tokenised syndicated loan. The partners published a joint report concluding the project in December 2021, finding that digitising syndicated loans on DLT could deliver efficiency gains and reduce operational risk relative to manual, paper-based processes.
