Project Khokha project
Overview
Project Khokha is the South African Reserve Bank's distributed ledger experiment for wholesale interbank settlement. The first phase, whose report and press statement were released on 5 June 2018, was run with a consortium of commercial banks and ConsenSys using Quorum, an enterprise Ethereum variant, to issue tokenised rand and replicate the SARB's real-time gross settlement flows. It reported that a typical day's volume of South African interbank payments could be processed in under two hours while preserving transaction confidentiality and settlement finality. A second phase, Khokha 2, followed in 2021-22 and extended the work to tokenised central bank money and debentures.
