Farcaster protocol
Overview
Farcaster is a decentralised social protocol that lets developers permissionlessly build and distribute social applications, rather than a single social network product. Its architecture separates identity from data: user identities are FIDs registered through an ID registry contract on Optimism, while social data (casts, reactions, follows) is propagated and stored across network nodes. The current data layer is Snapchain, which developers sync and query to read network state, and which can be run locally or mirrored into a PostgreSQL database for analysis. Three main developer paths exist: Mini Apps, which are social applications that run directly inside the Farcaster feed; Sign In with Farcaster (SIWF), which lets any app use Farcaster identity and social graph for authentication; and direct data analysis against Snapchain nodes. The protocol is maintained by the Farcaster team (farcasterxyz) with an active open-source contributor community, and positions itself as an alternative to centralised social platforms with user-owned data.
